Sensear SM1P-Ex Alternatives
Every ATEX headset for Zone 1
The Sensear SM1P-Ex is the default choice for intrinsically safe communication headsets — its patented SENS speech-enhancement technology is unmatched. But it’s not the only ATEX headset on the market. Here’s every certified alternative with honest trade-offs.
Why consider alternatives?
- You need a built-in radio. The SM1P-Ex connects to external two-way radios via cable. The 3M Peltor LiteCom Pro III Ex has a built-in PMR446 radio — no separate device needed.
- Budget is tight. The SM1P-Ex is the most expensive ATEX headset (~€850–1,100). The SM1B-Ex (battery-powered, no Bluetooth) starts at ~€550.
- You need Bluetooth-only (no radio). The Peltor Alert XPI Ex is a lighter, simpler option for Bluetooth-paired alerting — no two-way radio interface.
- You prefer wired simplicity. The ecom Ex-TRA 30 is a wired headset — no batteries, no Bluetooth, no radio. Lowest cost, simplest deployment.
- Neckband mounting. Only certain Peltor models offer neckband mounting, which some workers prefer under hard hats with specific chin strap configurations.

1. Sensear SM1B-Ex
Same SENS Technology, no Bluetooth. The SM1B-Ex uses the same patented speech-enhancement as the SM1P-Ex but drops Bluetooth connectivity. You get face-to-face conversation in 95+ dB environments and two-way radio connection via cable, but cannot pair wirelessly with an ATEX phone. At ~€550, it’s roughly 40% cheaper. Choose this if your workers don’t need phone calls in the field and use radio-only communication.

2. 3M Peltor LiteCom Pro III Ex
Built-in radio — the one thing Sensear lacks. The LiteCom Pro III Ex has a license-free PMR446 radio built into the headset, eliminating the need for a separate two-way radio device. This is a genuine advantage for sites where workers need basic team communication without carrying additional equipment. Noise cancellation uses 3M’s level-dependent technology (not SENS), which is less effective for continuous speech but provides excellent situational awareness. Slightly better attenuation (28 vs 27 dB NRR).

3. 3M Peltor Alert XPI Ex
Bluetooth-only, no radio interface. The Alert XPI Ex is a lighter, simpler ATEX headset with Bluetooth 5.0 for pairing with ATEX phones. No two-way radio connection, no built-in radio. Best for workers who need hearing protection with phone connectivity but don’t use radios. Highest NRR in this list (29 dB). At ~€450, it’s half the price of the SM1P-Ex. Zone 1 certified, IIC.
4. ecom Ex-TRA 30
Wired earpiece — zero complexity. The Ex-TRA 30 is a wired in-ear headset from ecom (Pepperl+Fuchs). No batteries, no Bluetooth, no radio — just a 3.5mm cable to an ATEX phone or radio. At ~€150, it’s the lowest-cost ATEX audio solution. Best for environments where only voice calls through a phone are needed and there’s no high-noise hearing protection requirement.
